Aquagrain an organic based soil improver which can absorb up to 30 times its mass in water

Aquagrain enables crops to be grown in free-draining, sandy soils, using a fraction of the water that would ordinarily be required.

In its standard format, Aquagrain has an organic base with both fast and slow-release nutrients to improves soils, stimulate microbial activity and provide food and water for plants. Aquagrain has a nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium (NPK) value of 5.4-6.6-4.2. It is pH neutral and has substrate binding properties.

Because it is an organic-based, cross-linked polymer granule, it can be manufactured to hold any number of additional ingredients that may be required for different crops or substrates. The NPK values can be enhanced, the absorbency ratio can be increased and its pH value can be altered.

Trials conducted at the National Institute of Agricultural Botany (NIAB) confirmed Aquagrain’s properties for extending the wilting point of plants.

Tomatoes were grown in sandy soil where the plants were irrigated normally until mature and then irrigation was ceased.

After 9 days under water stress, the plants without Aquagrain had reached permanent wilt point but the Aquagrain plants continued to grow, thrive and fruit.

Delta-T is a company which specialises in instruments for environmental science, including agronomy, plant physiology, eco-physiology, and soil moisture. Trials at Delta-T were conducted to demonstrate Aquagrain’s ability to absorb liquid, maintain soil moisture and reduce leachate.

Delta-T PR2 probes were buried in two columns of sand, one with and one without a layer of sand containing a ratio of 1% Aquagrain. These were then connected to a GP2 data logger which took readings at 30 second intervals. 1 litre of water was added to each sand column and the drainage water was collected.

After 2 1/2 days, most of the water in the column without Aquagrain had drained to the 40cm sensor and below, with low moisture levels (under 10%) present in the top half of the column. However, in the Aquagrain column, most of the water was held in the top half, with relatively little water present at 30 and 40cm.
